Spot-Light On Treasured Historic Sights
PLSI would like to highlight some of the long-neglected historic sites on Staten Island that have enormous potential for integration and adaptive reuse for the neighborhoods they are located in. Buy restoring and encouraging multi-purpose use of the buildings, and collaborating with non-profit institutions and responsible commercial development, we can all spur economic growth and preserve historic beauty in our neighborhoods.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society is part of Staten Island's cultural history and the grotto is a local treasure. This month, legislation I authored was signed into law that will make the society eligible for a property tax exemption on their grotto and meeting hall.
In 2000, the grotto was listed on the New York State and National Register of Historic Places as a "traditional cultural property." But because it doesn't fall into a traditional category, such as a designated place of worship or museum, Our Lady of Mount Carmel's property was not eligible for a tax exemption. This law will provide the group with the financial relief it needs to continue maintaining the grotto.
